Condition your animals as you would conditioning yourself for hard competition. One way to condition a horse or mules skin, is vinegar & water sprayed on their skin where the saddle and cinches will be rubbing. This needs to be done everyday for a least 3-4 weeks in advance of your pack trip. Make sure you use a natural fly spray on your animals. It make them less restless and keeps the bot flies at bay. The bot fly can lessen your animals life span if not treated. I make my own fly spray from essential oils and vinegar that really works well on our horses. Recipe below.
Make sure your horses or mules are properly shod for the trail.
Treat your animals like you would treat yourself. Take short day trips to get your animals and you into shape for the trail.
Brush and groom your animals, so as not to spread weed seeds, and burrs, etc.
Horse feeding – hay needs to be weed free hay. Don’t spread the weeks. Pack in processed feed – Sweet feed as a supplement feed for energy, mixed with alfalfa pellets. Also let you animals graze on the natural grasses when your stopped for a break.
